You may be wondering why we have a nonprofit organization dedicated solely to collecting socks for our Pittsburgh neighbors in need. It wasn’t until after our first collection drive that we learned socks are the item most requested by shelters for the unhoused and one of the least donated. Socks are vital not only to our comfort but to our well-being, providing warmth and protection.

Why Socks?

  1. Socks are the number one most requested by shelters and are constantly in demand.
  2. Our neighbors experiencing homelessness or financial hardships often walk miles every day, just to get food and other necessities, sometimes in inclement weather.
  3. Clean, dry socks help protect against foot ailments, such as trench foot, blisters, frostbite, athlete’s foot, other skin infections and nail diseases.
  4. Poor foot health not only causes indignities, but it can be so severe it can lead to mobility issues that prevent people from seeking food and other needed resources.
  5. New socks can be like a warm hug. They show that someone truly cares about their wellbeing. We have seen people rub them gently on their cheeks!
  6. New socks provide confidence… especially when seeking job interviews!
  7. Providing new socks meets a genuine need that has a significant impact on the lives of those in need.
